9.68

If you didn't watch this past weekend's Track & Field Olympic trials you missed history. I came away with one thought, Tyson Gay is really really fast. In Saturday's 100 meter men's semifinal, Gay broke the American record with a time of 9.77 seconds. If that wasn't enough, he ran a 9.68 second 100 meter on Sunday. This would have been a world record had his time not been wind aided. Usain Bolt currently holds the record with a time of 9.72. Nevertheless, this is still the fastest time a human being has ever covered a distance of 100 meters.

The funny thing about this whole story is that Gay almost didn't even get to run those races. In his first race, while leading comfortably, Gay pulled up to conserve energy for the next races. This wouldn't have been a problem if he didn't misjude where the finish line was. He was about 30 meters from the finish line, and had to kick it back into gear just to finish 4th (only the top 4 advance). This was a pretty big mistake for someone of his experience. Everything worked out, and he should be considered a favorite for the gold in Beijing.

That only seems fast because they have never timed me running that distance...oh wait, that was 100 meters? I thought you said 10 meters. Yeah, that IS fast.
